How to Tune a Cello
A beginner-safe C2–G2–D3–A3 sequence using a microphone tuner, fine tuners, careful peg movements, and perfect fifths.
Stop if a peg binds or the octave looks wrong
A cello peg should not require force. Tightening toward the wrong octave can break a string or damage the instrument. If a peg slips, sticks, jumps, or will not seat with a gentle turn, ask a teacher or repair professional to inspect it.

Tune CGDA step by step

Check the cello before turning anything
Place the cello securely on its endpin and inspect the bridge from the side. The strings should sit in their grooves, the bridge should not be visibly leaning toward the fingerboard, and each fine tuner should have room to move in both directions.

Set the reference and identify the correct octave
For ordinary modern tuning, use A4 = 440 Hz. Standard cello strings are C2, G2, D3, and A3 from lowest to highest. Confirm the octave as well as the note letter before tightening a string.

Tune the A string to A3
Start with the highest, thinnest string. Bow or pluck a steady open A and bring it to A3, 220 Hz at A440. Use the fine tuner for a small correction. If the string is far away and the peg must move, turn only a very small amount at a time.

Tune D3, then G2, then C2
Work downward through D, G, and C. This sequence lets the A reference anchor the remaining perfect fifths. Approach each target from slightly below so the peg and string settle while tension is increasing.

Recheck all four strings
Changing one string changes the total tension across the bridge. Return to A3 and check A-D-G-C again. New strings and large peg adjustments often require more than one pass.

Verify the fifths and bridge position
If you are comfortable tuning double stops, compare A-D, D-G, and G-C. A steady interval has less audible beating. Finish by checking that the bridge has not moved or leaned during tuning.
Fine tuner or peg?
Use the fine tuner when the string is already close. Clockwise usually raises pitch; counterclockwise lowers it. If the screw is near the end of its travel, reset it near the middle and use the peg to bring the string back close before fine-tuning.
Pegs are for larger corrections. Support the pegbox, move the peg by millimeters rather than a visible quarter turn, and use gentle inward pressure while turning so the taper seats. Never force a peg that resists normal movement.
Watch the bridge and tailpiece
Strings sliding over the bridge during tuning can pull its top toward the fingerboard. A leaning bridge can warp or fall. If it is visibly out of position, do not push it upright under full tension unless you have been shown how.
Fine-tuner screws should not press into the top of the cello. If a tuner bottoms out, buzzes, or touches the instrument, have the tailpiece setup checked.
Getting a steadier microphone reading
- Use an open string and remove left-hand vibrato from the measurement.
- Bow with moderate speed and pressure, away from loud fans or other instruments.
- Wait for the attack noise to pass; read the sustained center of the note.
- Select the target string manually if a strong harmonic makes auto-detection jump.
- Check the octave label, especially A3 versus the A4 concert-pitch reference.
- Repeat the reading with a pluck if bow noise is masking the fundamental.
