Standard (CGDA)
C2 · G2 · D3 · A3The standard cello tuning used by virtually all cellists. Strings are tuned in perfect fifths from low C2 to A3, providing the rich, deep range that defines the cello's voice in orchestral and solo repertoire.
Bach Suite V (CGDAb)
C2 · G2 · D3 · Ab3Bach's Fifth Suite for Unaccompanied Cello calls for scordatura with the A string tuned down to Ab. This creates a darker, more somber tone that suits the suite's sarabande and other movements.
Whole Step Down (BbFCG)
Bb1 · F2 · C3 · G3All strings tuned down a whole step. Sometimes used in contemporary music or to reduce tension on the instrument. Creates a deeper, more relaxed sound with less string tension.
Half Step Down (BF#C#G#)
B1 · F#2 · C#3 · G#3All strings lowered by a half step. Occasionally used in recordings or arrangements that call for a slightly lower pitch, or when playing with instruments tuned to A=415 Hz for baroque performance.
Open C (CGCG)
C2 · G2 · C3 · G3An open tuning producing a C power chord. Used in some contemporary and experimental cello music. The paired octaves of C and G create strong resonance for drone-based and minimalist compositions.
Drop C (CGDC)
C2 · G2 · D3 · C3Standard tuning with the A string dropped to C. Used in some contemporary pieces to extend the cello's range of open string resonances in the key of C.
